The last three days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) have been less busy (phew) but we’ve still visited some amazing places.
On Thursday we were able to walk from our accommodation to St Michael’s Mount, about 3 km from where we were staying.
It is an island linked to the town of Marazion by a man-made causeway, only passable between mid-tide and low tide. It is still the home of the St Aubyn family who have private apartments in the castle, but allow visitors to view many other areas of the castle and gardens.
St Michael’s Mount is the English counterpart of Mont Saint-Michel in France. It was given to the Benedictine religious order of Mont Saint-Michel by Edward the Confessor in the 11th century.
We had visited Mont St Michel when we went to stay with Mathilde and her father so were really looking forward to seeing the English version.

On Friday it was pouring with rain so we had to find something to do indoors. I looked up historic houses online which were in the area and found one called Lanhydrock. We were so pleased we found that one – not only was it part of the National Trust, getting us in for free, but it turned out to be a super interesting and well maintained house. The volunteers who run it told us that this home is the flagship house of the National Trust for the whole of England. The house was donated to the Trust in the 1950’s, along with all its possessions as the family could no longer afford the upkeep, plus there wee no living descendants interested in keeping it . This means they can display the rooms as if the family were still living there. It was fascinating.

We then drove on to our new accommodation in Bradford on Avon, which is in Wiltshire. It’s about a half hour drive from Bath and is an historic town. It was a wonderful little place to wander around.

So, of course, now we’re in the area, today (Saturday) we went to Bath. The great thing was that we were able to leave the car at home and go by bus. We came home by train. Bath is yet another historic, beautiful city. We had a great day wandering all round the city.
