Keep calm and carry on

Slowly, slowly, in case someone is coming the other way

On Monday morning (4 June) we left Torquay to journey to our next destination, Penzance, in Cornwall.

Along the way we stopped in Plymouth as we had wanted to see the Mayflower Steps (the general location of where the Mayflower left in 1620 to take the Pilgrim Fathers to America.) Unfortunately we couldn’t see them as they are undergoing renovation so instead we had a wander around the waterfront and port area.

Our next stop was a very historic looking town called Tavistock, which we just stumbled across as it was lunchtime and we were looking for something to eat. The buildings were really charming. Unfortunately the weather had turned cool and wet so we didn’t linger for long.

We then stopped into a little inlet called Helford Passage, a place suggested by our friend Trisha. On a fine day it would be a lovely place to spend a while and take a walk but it was a bit cool so we had a drink at the inn and got on the road again.

By now we were in the heart of Cornwall and were experiencing the true country roads we had been told about. Once you leave the highways many roads are unmarked and go from being true two lanes, down to one lane and back to two again. They can also be windy, have a single lane go between two buildings and have side roads join on a corner. When you meet an oncoming car one has to give way and often one will even have to back up to a wider part of the road so the other can pass. Initially it’s quite nerve-racking but after a bit you get used to it and it’s second nature. Everyone, so far, has been super polite and patient.
